Course content

The focus is concentrated on counterpoint in Palestrina- and Bach style.

Learning outcome

The course should provide practices for students in the composition of different kinds of movements for ecclesiastical use.

Knowledge:

The student:

  • has knowledge about 1500 century vocal polyphony based on the Palestrina style.
  • has knowledge about the framework for contrapuntal music in the style of J.S.Bach

Skills:

The candidate:

  • can write exercises and simple motets in two-and three-part counterpoint.
  • can write exercises and two-voice inventions in Bach-style
  • can draw lines from basic composition techniques to their own compositions.

Learning methods and activities

Weekly group classes.

Weekly works: Palestrina style in fall term, and Bach-style in spring term.

Satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction requires a minimum of 80% attendance.

Compulsory assignments

  • Satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction autumn
  • Up to 12 exercises in Palestrina style
  • Satisfactory participation in compulsory instruction spring
  • Up to 12 exercises in Bach style

Further on evaluation

The assessment consists of two portfolio submissions. In the autumn semester, the student writes out four of the weekly exercises in Palestrina style, in addition to two new ones, and submits these as the first portfolio. In the spring semester, the student writes out four of the weekly exercises in Bach style, in addition to two new ones, and submits these as the second portfolio.

The portfolios are delivered digitally in NTNU's examination system.

In order to take the exam, at least 80% of the weekly rehearsals must be approved (Palestrina in the autumn and Bach in the spring).

Requires passed MUSP4152 or MUSP4161 or corresponding course.
