About the course
Course content
The subject aims to give grounds for the students to teach in Music schools, voluntary music ensembles and in primary and secondary school. Our students become instrumental-and vocal teachers on all levels.
The subjects contains of the following themes:
Music as part of the educational system. Didactic relational thinking.
Curuculum. Academic arts and the concept of knowledge. Methods of vocal and instrumental instruction and organizing instruction. Methods for assessment. Model learning. Cultural schools as workspace. Authorizing music pedagogics, field research.
Instrumental- and vocal didactics:
-Methods for instrumental- and vocal teaching, organized by instrument.
-Instructional material and repertoire from a beginner to an advanced level.
-Methods for working with technique and expression.
-Methods for developing aural skills, music reading and improvisation.
-The role of the teacher, work-ethics. Choice of teaching repertoire, talent development.
Project and interdisciplinary work.
Course in band instruments. Didactics for wind-bands/brassbands, choir, bands, smaller ensembles. Improvisation methods, jazz, the role of the leader/skills.
Didactics for upper secondary school, music programme.
The course is, together with 30 credits pedagogics and up to 150 hours of teaching practice, a part of the Teacher education (PPU).
Learning outcome
Skills:
-can plan, lead and evaluate instrumental/vocal- teaching on beginners level, intermediate level and advanced level.
-can adapt the teaching to level the needs of each pupil.
-can use different methods for working with the technical and musical development, interpretation and practicing of the pupil.
-can use didactic thinking in planning, analysing and implementing teaching.
-can organize and lead different musical ensembles and fellowships.
-can include passing on good values and ethic reflection while working with pupils.
-can organize a teaching situation that builds the independent pupil.
-masters band instrument on a sufficient level.
-reflects systematically on own teaching theories, and shows self-insight while evaluating own teaching, will to development and thinking in new ways continuously.
Knowledge:
The student:
-Has knowledge about teaching processes and teaching theories on vocal and instrumental- teaching.
-has extended knowledge about teaching repertoire for her/his instrument.
-has insight in modern musical apprenticeship and tacit knowing.
-has insight in bodywork and prevention of body strains, and can guide the pupils.
-has knowledge about methods for listening, aural training and notation training, and integration of theory of music in instrumental/vocal teaching situations.
-has a conscience about the responsibilities of instrumental/vocal teacher in the society.
-can do a basic explorative work within music didactics.
Learning methods and activities
Problem-based learning, lectures, group work, seminars, observation of instruction and collection of documentation from field training.
Lessons: About 8 lessons a week. Instrumental methods teaching: 28 lessons per group. Band instrument course: 18 lessons.
Assessment: The portfolio consists of two documents. One document from part 1 of the study and one document from the second part, both 7-10 pages. Additionally the portfolio consists a FoU-document (20 pages). The three documents are assessed equally.
