Course content

In this course students will learn about light microscopy and electron microscopy and will learn about molecular imaging techniques with a focus on imaging innate immune cell activation. The course will provide the theoretical background on diverse imaging techniques that can be applied to study innate immune activation. Students will have practical training in imaging.

Learning outcome

After completing the course the student:

  • has learned about general concepts of fluorecence imaging
  • has gained insight into different types of imaging used in biomedical research, such as confocal laser scanning microscopy (LSM), stimulated emission depletion microscopy (STED) and electron microscopy (EM).
  • has had hands on wet lab experience with microscopes and has imaged biological samples
  • has learned about techniques allowing to measure molecular interactions by microscopy such as FRET
  • knows innate immunity pathways and how these can be captured by microscopy

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, wet-lab training, hands-on microscopy studies, home assignment. All lectures are given during one week in the fall semester.

Compulsory assignments

  • Attendance in lectures
  • Assignment

Further on evaluation

Retake of the exam: The student must have completed the mandatory activities and assignments to take the exam. If this is passed in a previous semester, it is sufficient to retake the written exam.

Required previous knowledge

Masters degree in biology, chemistry, physics, Medical Doctors degree, or medical students at the student research programme. Candidates with other or lower degree will be assessed individually.

Course materials

Scientific papers will be provided to the students for study and presentation.
