Course content

The course requires basic knowledge on qualitative methods. The course provides in-depth knowledge of qualitative methods with relevance for medicine and health science. Its focus is the necessary consistence in each study between aim, design, data collection and analytical approach. Learning activities concentrate on analysis, presentation of results, and the evaluation of quality and research ethics. Several analytical approaches will be presented, including how such analysis is conducted.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

After finishing the course, the student should

  • Have substantial knowledge about strengths and weaknesses with different approaches to qualitative research
  • Have substantial knowledge about different criteria for evaluating quality in qualitative research
  • Know the difference between inductive, abductive, and deductive design and analysis, and how these are used when designing a qualitative study.
  • Have substantial knowledge on which methodological issues that are discussed in articles based on studies with qualitative research
  • Have substantial knowledge of research ethics in qualitative research

Skills

After finishing the course, the student should

  • Be able to use their knowledge about strength and weaknesses in qualitative research when conducting a qualitative study
  • Evaluate the suitability of different methods for data collection of qualitative data for different research questions
  • Conduct analyses based on different analytical approaches
  • Critically evaluate research ethics for qualitative studies
  • Discuss strengths and weaknesses of methodological issues within different approaches to qualitative research

General competency

After finishing the course, the student should

  • Be able to critically evaluate articles from qualitative studies
  • Use terminology and forms of expression from different qualitative research traditions and identify similarities and differences between them
  • Use their knowledge and skills to carry out a qualitative study
  • Communicate about qualitative research methods with specialists within their own research field

Compulsory assignments

  • Full day seminar with presentation

Further on evaluation

Mandatory work including participation in a full day seminar on a preset date is required to pass the subject. Before the seminar, each student must submit a paper draft. Instructions for the submission will be provided during the course. Participation in the mandatory seminar includes presenting ones work and commenting on the work of other students.

Approved mandatory work is only valid the term of approval, and must be repeated if the student wants to re-sit the exam.

The exam is a written paper that is graded by letter.

Allowed aids for exam: Code G: specified printed and written aids allowed. All calculators allowed.
