Course content

Course content

This course consists of work on a master's thesis in music education including a creative practice. The master's thesis in music education with creative practice is independent, critical, ethical, methodical, informed and clearly articulated research, related to a topic relevant to music in an educational context. The master thesis consists of a creative practice and a written component which together explore the research question. The creative work can be presented as a digital, audio or audiovisual recording, an online format, as a live performance, workshop, event, community work, or other creative practice as agreed with the supervisor. The creative work and the written thesis are expected to be distinct yet interdependent, presenting an integrated approach to the research topic. The creative practice and the written component are distinct but mutually codependent parts of the approach to the research topic. Supervision is an important element in the work on the master's thesis, and supervision is a compulsory part of the course.

Form of assessment and grading scale

The individual practical creative work and individual written master's thesis are considered as exams for this course. The creative work and the written master's thesis explore the same research questions and are assessed with an examination criterion that reflects the mutual dependence on writing and practical creative work. The practical creative work is weighted 51% in the assessment. The practical creative work must be in accordance with the guidelines in line with ILU requirements as given by the course coordinator. The written dissertation is weighted 49% in the assessment. The master's thesis must be written in accordance with guidelines in line with the ILU requirements given by the course coordinator. The assessment is made through the letter grade A-F, where the grades A-E mean passed and F means failed. Both forms of assessment must be approved for the master's thesis to be passed. If a part fails, only this part must be taken back to pass. If a student wants to improve the assessment result, it is possible to take up only one of the parts.

The thesis is usually submitted individually, but can also be submitted as joint work between two students. If the thesis is submitted as joint work, a document must be attached which describes the contribution of the individual candidate. This will involve individual assessment of the candidates.
