Course content
The master's thesis is an independent, scientific work on a topic, where the student must show both breadth and depth in their subject understanding. The topic choice of the master's thesis is normally limited to the areas where the employees have their research competence. Supervision is an essential component in the work on the master's thesis. The work on the master's thesis must ensure that the student acquires the necessary competence in the scientific work and that it is carried out in accordance with research ethics guidelines.

The student
- has specialized insight into a limited subject area (master's thesis)
- has in-depth knowledge of relevant research and theory and scientific thinking, research methods and ethics
- will gain insight into the various steps of the research process: constructive and critical assessment of others' research, research planning and collaboration, data collection, analysis and dissemination

The student
- must carry out an independent research project
- can critically apply research-based knowledge with relevance to the subject of physical education and the practice of the profession to the exploration of new problem areas
General competence
The student
- can at an advanced level dissiminate and communicate about professional issues related to the practice of the profession
- can analyze and assess relevant professional and ethical issues and contribute to the development of professional communites

The master's thesis is mainly an independent work with supervision.

Mandatory work requirements: Presentation at a mid-term seminar, assessed with approved / not approved.
Mandatory work requirements must be approved before one can apply for the exam. Candidates who are in danger of being refused entry to the exam due to lack of work requirements, shall be notified of this, cf. regulations on studies at NTNU. New / postponed exams are conducted in accordance with current study regulations at NTNU.
The Master thesis is normally written as a monograph. The thesis is submitted individually or as joint work between two students. If the thesis is submitted as joint work, a document must be attached which describes the contribution of the individual candidate. This will normally involve individual assessment of the candidates.
Specific conditions
Admission to a programme of study is required:
Primary and Lower Secondary Teacher Education for Years 1-7 (MGLU1-7) - some programmes
Primary and Lower Secondary Teacher Education for Years 5-10 (MGLU5-10) - some programmes
Recommended previous knowledge
Passed 30 ects at master's level in physical education in the fourth year of primary and lower secondary school teacher education or equivalent.
Required previous knowledge
Passed Physical Education 1 and Physical Education 2 (a total of 60 credits) or equivalent.
Passed R&D assignment in the third year of primary and lower secondary school teacher education
