Course content

Language and literature are the two disciplinary characteristics of the Norwegian subject and are fundamental subject areas in all Norwegian didactic research. Language and language didactics, like literature and literature didactics, are broad subject areas that include, among other things, cognitive, socio-cultural and aesthetic theories. The course offers both a broad and deep insight into such theories, and prepares the candidates to use these in their own research and in practice. In particular, the course focuses on theories about and views on language and literature, and on didactic perspectives that are relevant for Norwegian education. The students will read and analyze oral and written language, non-fiction and fiction from the present and past. Children's and young people's language, children's and young people's literature and children's and young people's oral and written text creations are given particular importance. Central to the subject is also work with aesthetic, creative and exploratory processes in the Norwegian subject. The course focuses on education, and a central aim in the course is therefore that the student's own development as language and literature teachers. Throughout the term, both a general syllabus is taught for all the candidates and the students choose to specialize on either language or literature.

  • has in-depth knowledge of literature in various genres and media formats, including literature for children and young adults
  • has in-depth theoretical and research-based knowledge of creativity and aesthetics in language and literature

Skills

The student

  • can use and relate critically to research literature and use it in didactically relevant reasoning
  • can assess and apply insights, theories and methods from linguistics and literature in various Norwegian didactic fields
  • can carry out theory-based analyzes of different types of empirical work, and reflect on didactic potential
  • can use knowledge of Norwegian didactic relevant research in language and literature in his/her own professional development and in professionally oriented research and development work

General competence

The student

  • can discuss and convey knowledge from Norwegian didactic relevant research in language and literature, both with colleagues, students and other relevant target groups
  • can use knowledge of didactically relevant research in language and literature in own teaching practice and in new areas of work
  • can communicate own research both to colleagues, students and the general public
  • can transfer and adapt their own learning and professional development to the teaching profession

Compulsory activities:

  • Up to fifteen exercises of a written or oral nature related to the teaching of the subject

The work requirements must be approved for the student to be able to sit for the exam.

Assessment:

Home examination over three days linked to the candidate's self-selected immersion in language or literature.
