Course content

The course makes use of historical and practical approaches to explore secular and religious philosophy and ethics, and philosophical and ethics-didactical research and theory. Compulsory themes include ethics didactics, philosophical dialogue (P4C), judgement, and development of critical thinking within religions and secular world views. In the didactical aspect of the course, analytical ability and practical competence via the discussion of ethical and philosophical questions will be developed and practiced.

  • has in-depth knowledge of progress in teaching and pupils' learning

The student

  • is capable of comparing and analytically reflecting on the relationship between religious and secular theories of ethics and philosophy
  • is capable of comparing and analytically reflecting on the relationship between selected philosophical schools and a selection of ethical ways of thinking
  • is capable of applying knowledge of philosophical schools and didactics of philosophy in planning, carrying out, and analyzing teaching material and teaching practices
  • is capable of applying knowledge of ethical ways of thinking and didactics of ethics in planning, carrying out, and analyzing teaching material and teaching practices
  • is capable of analyzing and taking a critical stance to national and international research related to the teaching of ethics and philosophy, and can apply this knowledge in the exercise of the profession
  • is capable of planning and carrying out teaching in CREE in a way that promotes the pupils’ philosophical and ethical ways of thinking

Learning methods and activities

The teaching in the course will be organized in seminars, the schedule and content of which will be presented at the beginning of term. Between the seminars the students are expected to read and work on tasks related to each their preparation and development of their masters theses. The activity in the seminars will vary between lectures, individual and collaborative work, discussions, and student presentations. Discussions and other academic interactions, such as responding to fellow students work, are important ways to develop one`s skills in this discipline, and all students are expected to participate in these activities.

Further on evaluation

The following activities must be completed in order to take the exam:

Participation in philosophical dialogues. Written reflections related to philosophical dialogues. Oral presentations. Paper related to leading a philosophical dialogue. Detailed requirements and delivery deadlines will be announced at the start of the semester.

The assessment of these works will be graded either passed or not passed.

Exam:

Individual off campus exam, 7. days. Grading system, A-F.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Primary and Lower Secondary Teacher Education for Years 5-10 (MGLU5-10) - some programmes

Required previous knowledge

Candidate must have successfully passed CREE 1 (30 credits) and completed CREE 2 (30 credits) to begin Cycle 2 courses. Passing is understood as the student completing the course and passing the examination. Completed is understood as having all obligatory coursework approved and qualifying the student for the course examination.
