Course content

The aim of this course is to develop digital competences for teachers in lower and upper secondary school, and to give a wholesome introduction to the field of music, technology and education. The main components are the use of hardware and software for producing, composing and performing music, critical assessment of music technologies' constraints and affordances in different educational settings, as well as designing lessons where technology and digital tools are embedded. The course has a clear focus on exploration and co-created learning, where educational competences are developed in the intersection between theory and practice.

Knowledge

The student is expected do develop

  • advanced knowledge of different software and hardware, and how these can be embedded in music education
  • ​thorough research-based understanding of perspectives on music teaching and music technology

Skills

The student is expected to know how to

  • independently produce, compose and perform music with a selection of technologies
  • can critically assess affordances and constraints of different technologies in educational contexts
  • can independently plan, carry out, analyze and relate critically to teaching with music technologies in different learning spaces
  • can relate critically to copyright laws and privacy protection in educational settings

General skills

The student is expected to be able to

  • further develop professional digital competence throughout his/her professional career
  • can cooperate on innovation processes with peers, pupils, colleagues and legal guardians to maintain the music subject´s relevance in line with the technological development

Compulsory activities

  • Individual production or composition product created with an optional software
  • Performance where music technology is used and the artistic content is created through collaboration with peers
  • Curriculum and theory related educational reflection text, linked to product or performance
  • One workshop for a group of students

All compulsory activities must be approved to be qualified for the exam. Course work connected to compulsory activites requires an attendance of 80%. Compensatory work can be given in case of an excessive absence rate.

Assessment (exam):

The student will design a learning room and teach with / through / in music technology for a group of fellow students or other students. After the teaching, a reflection interview is conducted which is based on the teaching and links it to theory.

Specific conditions

Required previous knowledge

Candidate must have successfully passed Music 1 and completed Music 2 to begin Cycle 2 courses. Passing is understood as the student completing the course and passing the examination. Completed is understood as having all obligatory coursework approved and qualifying the student for the course examination.
