Course content

The course provides study as a performer, teacher and researcher in varied work of music. The course deals with performing, creative and listening skills and activities in music, and provides experience with a music pedagogical research and development project..

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

At the end of the course the student is expected to:

  • have knowledge about music pedagogical practices in school and society
  • have knowledge about formal and informal learning in music
  • have basic knowledge of some research-method approaches and of ethical research principles and confidentiality
  • have knowledge about different research and development work in music pedagogical practices
  • have knowledge about a variety of musical genres and styles
  • have knowledge about interdiciplinarity projects in music
  • have knowledge about creative processes in dance

Skills:

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:

  • plan, lead, carry out and evaluate a variety of learning methods in music
  • present a varied repertoire of music alone and together with others
  • apply listening skills in analysis, creating and performing music
  • improvise, compose and arrange music for acoustic- as well as digitalinstruments
  • create and perform dance together with others
  • facilitate musical material for different performingsituations and for music teaching and learningprocesses
  • relate to performing music and dance
  • initiate, implement, present and evaluate qualities in music pedagogical research and development projects
  • search for, find and relate to previous research within specific music pedagogical topics

General skills:

At the end of the course the student is expected:

  • to be able to take part in qulafied discussions about the importance of pedagogical research and development work in schools
  • to have insight for artistic and scientific research in music
  • to be able to contribute to professional processes of changes by emphasizing innovation, changes and flexibility in profession as a teacher

Learning methods and activities

The teaching methodes alternate between individual and group-tuitions, lectures, group work and practical music making.. The students will work practically and develop knowledge and skills in musicianship, ensemble playing, composition, arranging, musical understanding, leadership and communication. Students are to complete their own research and development projects under supervision. Excursion costs must be expected.

Obligatory work requirements:

  • Two compositions/arrangements
  • An music-pedagogical assignment
  • A dance assignment in group
  • A concert together with other students
  • A colloquium report concerning obligatory reading list
  • Initiate, implement and carry out a limited music pedagogical research and development projects
  • Design and present a research project and prepare a response to fellow students research-projects

Attendance at teaching practice, including required activities

Collaboration: Pedagogical activities, dancing, ensemble-playing, rehearsals for concerts.:

80 % of overall hours.

Composition and listening training: 80 % of overall hours.

Group presentation, individual test and FOU-conference: 100 %

In the case of excessive absences, the missed work can be partly replaced by compensatory tasks. Furthermore, the obligatory requirements are assessed as approved/not approved and must be approved before the student can present for assessment of the module.

Assessment

Part 1, approved/not approved: Individual research and development assignment (0%).

Part 2, approved/not approved: Practical exam (concert). Group exam where instrumental skills, song, versatility and communication in the ensemble situation will be assessed. Allowed aids: Text, sheet music, musical instruments.

Part 3: Grading A-F: Portfolio consisting of 3 contributions: one music pedagogical task, one transcription, one studio work with reflection (100%). Both part 1, 2 and three must be approved.

Partial assessments can be taken up or improved individually (not oral/practical examination).

If R&D work is not approved, you have opportunity to submit an improved assignment for assessment only once (counted as exam attempt number two). At the third exam attempt, a completely new assignment must be submitted.

It is possible to appeal a grade given on parts of the assessment (not oral/practical examination).

New or deferred examinations will be completed in accordance with the relevant student regulations at NTNU.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Primary and Lower Secondary Teacher Education for Years 5-10 (MGLU5-10) - some programmes

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to study program: school teacher education 5.-10.step (MGLU5-10)
