Course content

Performative, listening, and creative practices within music and dance, with an educational perspective based on practical musicking together with other students and children. The course is related to music as a subject in primary school classes 1-7. There is a particular focus on the youngest children, the transition from kindergarten, and play-based multimodal agencies. The course is based on research-based knowledge, methods, and theory. The courses material and working methods in the practical training aim to equip the students with skills, knowledge, and experiences that enable them to teach and facilitate children’s ability and need to express themselves and to artfully be present in the world through cultural sensitivity, music-making, and performance, as well as experiencing sonic and embodied musical expressions.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The student

  • has research-based knowledge about teaching, esthetical and creative learning processes, and different approaches to progression in music teaching.
  • has knowledge of how music is used and integrated into different contexts of society and media.
  • has knowledge about the history of the music subject and its role in society, a critical perspective on adequate sociocultural contexts, the current curriculum, and its development.
  • has knowledge about digital and analog teaching tools for the music subject
  • has knowledge about different teaching methods and learning processes.

Skills:

The student

  • can listen actively to a broad selection of music from different genres, historical eras, and cultures and show knowledge about this music through oral, written, and other means of expression.
  • can critically consider and master different approaches to music education and progression in music as a school subject
  • can plan, use, and critically evaluate a variety of working teaching,- and assessment methods that contribute to a differentiated music education
  • can facilitate learning processes in ensemble and singing for different ensemble groups, and can organize music teaching based on a musical repertoire from different genres, countries, and cultures for pupils of specific ages in primary school.

General skills

The student

  • can plan and carry out a complete teaching sequence and reflect on coherence in goals, content, and form of assessment in the music subject.
  • can initiate professional collaboration and facilitate music learning in multidisciplinary themes- and project work.

Learning methods and activities

The teaching methods will vary between group-based teaching, lectures, and practical musicianship. The students will participate in a learning process where they develop knowledge, skills, and general skills working with the production, interpretation, and performing of music. This encompasses a large extent of individual effort. The students will get professional guidance on parts of their work, both individually and in groups. The teaching will be process-oriented, focusing on critical perspectives, with student-active working methods centered around playing, creating, and exploring music.

Attendance:

  • Attendance to classes that are based on student collaboration: 80%

In the case of excessive absences, the missed work can be partly replaced by compensatory tasks.

Furthermore, the obligatory requirements are assessed as approved/not approved and must be approved before the student can present for the course exam.

Exam:

  • Practical exam in ensemble leading, weighted 51%
  • Written assignment, weighted 49%
