About the course

Course content

The course presents a systematic, practical and didactical approach to the study of religion and worldviews, with examples from Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, new religious movements and secular worldviews. An introduction to the history of philosophy is given, as well as to how to work with philosophy in shcool. The students will be familiarised with central research traditions both in relevant academic subjects and in the didactics of the subject. The scope of the syllabus and teaching related to KRLE subject matter will be approximately the same as in the primary and lower secondary school curriculum.

Learning outcome

KNOWLEDGE

The student 

  • has knowledge of and is familiar with the use in school of texts, narratives, festivals, teachings, rituals, and other practices, ethics, and aesthetics with examples from Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, new-religious movements and secular worldviews. This also includes Christian Sami narratives and Sami aesthetics.
  • has knowledge of a selection of Christian denominations and the history of Christianity and how to work on historical topics.
  • has knowledge of human rights, The ILO Convention on Indigenous and Tribal peoples in Independent Countries and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the discussions on various consequences of these rights for education in KRLE  
  • has knowledge of the history of philosophy and opportunities related to work with philosophical issues in the subject.
  • has knowledge of didactic challenges that are specific to the subject.

SKILLS

The student 

  • knows how to apply approaches that integrate initial KRLE-education and the basic skills.
  • is capable of identifying and dealing with challenges linked to how the school and the pupils address diversities of worldviews.
  • can lead philosophical dialogues that bring student groups together as exploratory communities.
  • is capable of cooperating with pupils, colleagues, parents/guardians, and stakeholders in the local community

GENERAL COMPETENCE

The student

  • is capable of discussing the significance of religion and worldviews for the individual and for society as a whole
  • has a well-explained view on what it means to be a KRLE teacher.
  • can reflect critically on the KRLE subject and make use of research about children, religion and worldviews.

Learning methods and activities

The course is organised with regular weekly teaching. Excursions can take place outside regular teaching hours. The teaching methods alternate between lectures, work on assignments individually and in groups, discussions, as well as oral and written student presentations.

Further on evaluation

The following activities must be completed in order to take the exam:

  • Participation in 2 excursions (Hindu temple, Buddhist temple) and writing reflection logs related to the excursions.
  • Plan and carry out visits to two Christian denominations and present these denominations to fellow students through a systematic comparison (group presentation)
  • Plan and carry out an excursion for fellow students focusing on Christian aesthetics as well as to attend and evaluate field trips led by fellow students
  • Mandatory task connected to philosophy

The possibility and content of any compensatory work will be assessed individually. 

The coursework requirements are assessed as approved/not approved, and all must be approved before the student can take the exam.

Form of assessment and grading scale:

Individual written school exam, 6 hours, grading scale A-F, no support materials
