Course content
It is recommended, but not required, that students select the thesis topic in collaboration with their employer, and that the topic is related to ongoing workplace research, development, implementation or investigations related to health informatics.

Learning outcome
Knowledge
A graduate candidate has:
- A basic practical and theoretical understanding of the construction and operation of modern information systems, has knowledge of concepts, methods and techniques necessary for effective solutions in the health sector.
- Deep knowledge and understanding of how the characteristics of the health sector affect the introduction, use and dissemination of information technology
- Basic knowledge of information technology tools and systems for different types of health professionals including clinicians.
- Extensive knowledge of, and practical experience with methods, tools and techniques for analyzing needs, specifying, constructing and evaluating interactive health information systems.
- Insight into public and political plans, strategies and initiatives on information technology in the health sector.
- Basic knowledge of relevant legislation and ethical issues related to the development and use of information and information technology in the health sector.
Skills
A graduate candidate has:
- Well-developed skills in identifying, defining and analyzing complex information technology problems and patient and user needs and being able to specify, design, implement and evaluate computer technology solutions.
- Good skills to function as a competent and demanding customer in purchasing, introduction and development projects with information technology in the health sector.
- Basic skills to find and have professional prerequisites for using existing software and frameworks.
- Basic skills to use available sources of information to find research results.
General competence
A graduate candidate has:
- Deep competence in being able to communicate orally and in writing about professional issues and solutions both within and outside the health sector.
- Well-developed competence to be able to collaborate effectively with others and contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Basic competence to be able to take professional leadership in information technology projects in the health sector.
- Deep competence to be able to stay professionally up to date, including being able to develop their professional competence on their own initiative. Basic competence to be able to understand the role and consequences of information technology in the health sector.
Learning methods and activities
A gathering is arranged for the master's students at the beginning of the course to present potential supervisors and topics.
Each student should have selected a topic and supervisor by the end of february.

Further on evaluation
The master thesis can be written in pairs or individually. The master thesis is assessed on the basis of the written work and an oral examination. The examiners give a preliminary grade to the master thesis in advance of the oral examination. The oral examination can be used to adjust the grade of the written work with up to one grade up or down. The student is only made aware of the final grade. If the grade for the written work is assessed as F (failed), no oral examination is held.
Oral exams are generally held digitally.
