About

About the course

Course content

Semester 3A is reserved for writing a medical research paper. The purpose of writing this paper is to generate a scientific, problem-oriented way of thinking in the students and promote their ability for life-long learning. Working with the paper will give the students training in independent problem-solving, critical assessment of scientific literature and formulating a clear approach to a problem.

During the fall semester of the fourth year, the student has chosen a topic, made arrangements with his/her tutor and written a protocol for the paper. The paper must in a broad sense be relevant for medical theory or practice. The extended essay can be a scientific work built on existingdata or original observations within a limited field.

Learning outcome

There are several learning objectives related to the semester subjects. These objectives are available at the "Læringsutbyttedatabasen" at the faculty`s home page.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, independent work with the main task under supervision that includes problem formulation, literature search, data collection, processing and analysis, including written presentation and critical assessment of the assignment.

Further on evaluation

Supervision, limited to 30 hours per assignment, including supervisor's pre- and post-assignment.

If the grade is not passed, a new or revised assignment with significant changes can be submitted for assessment one more time. The course coordinator for the thesis sets, in consultation with the student and supervisor(s), a new submission deadline up to three months in advance. The head of department decides how much supervision the student is entitled to when reworking (approximately 10 hours, including the supervisor's preparations).
