Course content

  • Design of machine elements, bolted and welded joints for dynamic loading.
  • Lateral and torsional buckling.
  • Fracture mechanics.
  • Damage-tolerant design.
  • Improvement of life span of the constructions.

Learning outcome

The candidate understands how to use the mechanical properties of steel as construction material. The candidate can define the design limit states. The candidate has knowledge of the design of dynamically loaded constructions due to fracture and fatigue. The candidate has an understanding of design methods based on the S-N-curves and damage-tolerant design.

Learning methods and activities

  • Lectures
  • Seminars
  • Group work

Compulsory assignments

  • Mandatory assignments

Further on evaluation

Mandatory work from previous semester can be accepted by the Department by re-take of an examination if there have not been any significant changes later.

Compulsory exercises: - 2/3 of mandatory tasks are required to be approved to take the exam.

Project assignment for group, presentation of project results shall be approved to take the exam.

Project report is 40% of the grade.

Individual written exam is 60% of the grade. Aids are according to support material code C.

Resit exam is held in August. Resit exam may change examination form from written exam to oral exam if the teacher decides this.

Resit exam can be implemented for some parts without all assessments need to be retaken. It is given the opportunity to complain about parts of evaluation in this course before all sub-evaluations have been completed.
