Course content
The content may vary, but the course normally contains the following topics: topological spaces, metric spaces, continuous functions, product topologies, separation, quotient topologies, nets and filters, countability, compactness, metrizable spaces, connectedness. The course is given every second year, next time spring 2013.
Learning outcome
1. Knowledge. The student has knowledge of fundamental concepts and methods in general topology.
2. Skills. The student is able to apply his or her knowledge of general topology to formulate and solve problems of a topological nature in mathematics and other fields where topological issues arise.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures. The lectures will be given in English if they are attended by students from the Master's Programme in Mathematics for International students. Retake of examination may be given as an oral examination.
Recommended previous knowledge
TMA4100 Calculus 1, TMA4105 Calculus 2, TMA4115 Calculus 3 and TMA4120 Calculus 4K or MA1101 Basic Calculus I, MA1102 Basic Calculus II, MA1103 Vector Calculus, MA1201 Linear Algebra and Geometry, MA1202 Linear Algebra with Applications and MA2105 Complex Function Theory with Differential Equations.
