Course content
Topics included are: Basic logic and method of proofs, systems of linear equations, Gaussian elimination, vectors in 2-space and 3-space (scalar and cross products), R^n, matrices, determinants (Cramer's rule, determinants as area and volume), rank and dimension of space of solutions, linear transformations and their geometric properties in R^2, associated matrices for R^2 and R^3, some theory on eigenvalues for matrices, diagonal matrices, conic sections, numerial aspects (Gauss-Seidel),
complex numbers.
Learning outcome
1. Knowledge. The student is familiar with basic concepts and methods in linear algebra, including linear systems of equations, matrices and Gaussian elimination, rank, determinants and eigenvalues. The student has knowledge of geometric aspects of basic linear algebra, such as vectors, linear transformations and conical sections. The student is familiar with complex numbers, basic logic and proof structures.
2. Skills. The student is able to recognize linear problems and to formulate them in terms of linear systems of equations. Moreover, the student masters algorithms and methods to make calculations with linear systems and related geometric structures. The student is able to write simple mathematical proofs.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, compulsory exercises and mid-semester examination.
Portfolio assessment is the basis for the grade awarded in the course. This portfolio comprises a written final examination (80%) and the mid-semester examination (20%). The mid-semester examination only counts if it has a positive effect on the final grade. The results for the constituent parts are to be given in %-points, while the grade for the whole portfolio (course grade) is given by the letter grading system. Retake of examination may be given as an oral examination.
Compulsory assignments
- Exercises
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is based on Mathematics R2 or 3MX from high school or equivalent.
