Course content
The course will consider important questions that teachers should be familiar with, work with and reflect over when working with the LK20 curriculum's competency aims on Sámi topics in the classroom. Based on the content of the new curriculum, this course will enhance knowledge on topics relating to indigenous peoples. These topics will include, among other things, Sámi history, language, culture and identity, and didactical approaches to these topics in the classroom.
The following themes will be covered during the course:
- Content in the new curriculum. The general section and subject specific competency aims relating to indigenous peoples. Implicit and explicit competency aims, and the potential for cross-curricular teaching.
- Theoretical perspectives on how to teach about topics relating to indigenous peoples in the classroom in an appropriate way.
- Basic knowledge of the Sámi historical and political situation, Sámi identity, Sámi language and its diversity and Sámi literature, with a special focus on South Sámi content.
- Sámi pedagogy, inclusive pedagogy and activities that promote dialogue.
- Subject specific activities relating to curriculum interpretation, focusing on the subjects Social Studies, Norwegian and English.
- Development of own research based activities for use in the classroom and for dissemination in other situations.
Learning outcome
A student who has completed the course is expected to have achieved the following:
Knowledge:
- Have knowledge about the inclusion and development of indigenous topics in the curriculum historically and up to current times.
- Have basic knowledge about Sámi politics, history, language, literature and culture in general.
- Have basic knowledge about South Sámi history, language and culture.
- Have basic knowledge of Sámi pedagogy and inclusive pedagogy.
- Have developed their own awareness of topics relating to indigenous peoples.
- Have knowledge of the Sámi curriculum, and how it is separate from the Norwegian curriculum.
- Have insight into political decisions regarding education which have been meaningful for Sámi history, culture and language in schools.
Skills:
- Can understand and interpret content about indigenous peoples in the curriculum.
- Can analyse and look critically at teaching materials.
- Can develop suitable teaching materials for the grades that they will work with, based on theories and knowledge about the Sámi and about inclusive pedagogies.
- Can use principles from Sámi and inclusive pedagogies actively in the planning of their own teaching.
- Can critically analyse representations of Sámi history, culture and language.
General skills:
- Can assess own practice with subject knowledge of Sámi conditions as a basis, and reflect over own learning and practice relating to ethical core values and the school's responsibility for children and young people's personal growth.
- Can ensure Sámi pupils' rights in school.
- Can convey relevant subject content and communicate in a way that is suitable for the group at which it is aimed.
Learning methods and activities
Teaching will be over approximately 13 weeks. Teaching will include both written and oral activities which cover different themes, and use different forms of communication for cooperation and interaction between students. Students will during the course of the semester write five texts as obligatory assignments. These texts will cover different aspects of the course, and feedback will be given on these in the form of written comments and/or guidance. Three of these texts will be chosen for the portfolio, which will be submitted as the exam.
Teaching is offered in both in Norwegian and in English, depending on the languages spoken in the class. The reading list is available in both languages.

The grade in the course is given based on an individual portfolio containing three texts, chosen from the five obligatory assignments that are written during the semester. One grade is given for the portfolio. All texts in the portfolio must be at pass grade or above. Assignments can be submitted in Norwegian or in English.
