About the course

Course content

This course explores the relationship between the new media technologies and cultural change. The course builds on humanistic and social studies of technological development with an emphasis on how both the development and usage of technology is gendered processes. The course focuses on digital interaction and communication in relation to work and spare time, like e-mail, computer games, facebook, twitter and on the relevant societal challenges in regards to equality, power, control, quality of life, information and democracy.

The course is also open to BA students from other programmes of study .

Learning outcome

Students of this course have knowledge about:
• Processes that shapes production and acquisition of new media technologies, with focus on gender, design and use.
• Perspectives on central cultural changes from the introduction of digital communication, virtual societies and social media.
• Design and use of relevant digital forums, like for example social media sites, blogs, forums and virtual worlds.
• Design and use of technology as gendered processes.

Students of this course are skilled at:
• Analyzing new media technologies as carriers and creators of culture.
• Analyzing acquisition and use of new technology, focusing on the role of the user.
• Analyzing usage of new media technologies with a gendered perspective.
• Writing well reasoned academic texts.


Learning methods and activities

Students will be assessed on the basis of a home exam. The course is an undergraduate elective in media studies towards a BA in Art, Media and Communication. The students must have passed exercises. Home-exam 7-10 pages.
