Course content

The academic content of the course will vary from semester to semester. The course is an in-depth course in a specific topic in recent art, from Romanticism to the present day. The course can shed light on a specific era or an artistic movement in visual art and/or architecture (eg the landscape art of Romanticism, the social images of Realism or the architecture of Postmodernism) or be thematically limited (eg political caricatures, gender perspectives in art). Through examination of different types of work, students will get an introduction to current theory and method.

Learning outcome

The candidate's general competence after completing the course:

  • specialized knowledge of a limited subject from 1800 until today
  • be able to reflect on the aesthetic and social significance of art or architecture
  • understand and reflect on art in a historical and cultural perspective
  • independently and critically communicate the academic content of the course both in writing and in oral form

Learning methods and activities

  • Lectures and seminars. Excursions can also be included in the instruction.
  • Obligatory assignment: an oral presentation a must be passed before the final assessment in the course.
  • The students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Blackboard.
  • All activities are joint with KUH2311.
  • The language of teaching is planned to be English but may take place in Norwegian.
