Course content
The course explores various themes in art history before 1750. Students will obtain in-depth knowledge in a particular subject chosen by the course teacher and corresponding with the teachers current scholarly interests.
The topic of the course will vary from year to year: for example: " The divinity of the virgin mother: Maria in the medieval imagery", "Jews and Muslims in Medieval Imagery" or "the Nidaros Dome from Olav the Holy to Olav Engelbrektsson".
«Jews and Muslims in Medieval Imagery»: Medieval Christians met other religions through expeditions, crusades and trade, but also as religious minorities in their own towns and cities. These cultural meetings were reflected in contemporary painting and sculpture; together with written sources they make up a fascinating field of research. The course reading list takes the students on a round trip, from multicultural Spain to Norway, a country without Jewish or Muslim minorities, but with a surprising number of vivid images depicting these groups. The course discusses these images in their contemporary setting, their intention and function. How these images can be used, misused and understood post-Holocaust and post-Muhammed caricatures will also be dwelt upon.
