About

About the course

Course content

The course deals with Western art and Norwegian art, and covers the history of modern art from romanticism to the present day. The period is characterized by industrialization, colonialism and the emergence of new economic powers, such as the United States (established 1776). In the 19th century, we see the emergence of art as an autonomous, free activity, liberated from the demands of patrons. We see the establishment of the concept of avant-garde art, as well as women gaining access to art education and fighting their way into the art world. Our own time is characterized by globalization and postcolonial tendencies, and the course also addresses some of these.
