About the course
Course content
What is theory and methodology in art history? The course provides a basic overview of the theory, method and the historiography of art history. In addition to subject-specific perspectives, the course will address interdisciplinary critical theory, central to the study of art history today. Different theoretical and methodological starting points for analysis and understanding of specific works will be discussed. The curriculum consists of central original texts as well as overview literature.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
After completing the course, the student has:
- basic knowledge of different theoretical/methodological perspectives in art history
- knowledge of the historical background for central theories of the discipline
- a critical understanding of the use of methods in the discipline
Skills
After completing the course, the student is able to:
- analyze an artwork based on perspectives beyond the traditional formal/iconographic method
- make a reasoned choice of theory and method in a written assignment
Learning methods and activities
The course consists of diverse teaching methods, like lectures, seminars or group teaching.
The students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Blackboard.
Further on evaluation
Portfolio assessment with two written assignments during the semester. Pass/fail assessment form.
There is an oral exam as the form of assessment for a re-sit exam.
