Course content

The course covers Greek, Roman, Early Christian and medieval art and architecture from approx. 500 BC-1400. The course shows the development of art from archaic to Roman times, and the evolution of classical art from Greek city-states to Roman imperial times. Christian art orginates in the Roman Empire, and the course follows the development of Christian visual art and architecture throughout the Middle Ages until the Reformation. Medieval art in a Europe characterized by the central role of the Christian church, feudal system and urban growth. The course also follows the Scandinavian development through the Viking Age and the Middle Ages.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

After completing the course, the student

  • has basic knowledge of visual art and architecture in antiquity and the Middle Ages
  • is able to see the art in light of causal relationships and development processes
  • understands and is able to explain the central concepts included in an art or architectural historical work analysis

Skills

After completing the course, the student can

  • conduct a style analysis, and determine where and when a work is produced on the basis of stylistic and iconographic characteristics
  • carry out a building analysis, and be able to characterize monuments on the basis of ground floor and elevation
  • use their knowledge of the art of the relevant periods to participate in the public debate, e.g. in connection with protective issues

Learning methods and activities

The course has different teaching methods, which can be lectures, seminars, or group teaching. Excursions may also be included in the teaching program, but will not be mandatory.

Obligatory activities: one or more written exercises must be passed before the final assessment in the course.

The students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Blackboard.

Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian but may take place in English.
