Course content

The course gives a theoretical as well as a practical introduction to principles and techniques of chromatography: adsorption and partition chromatography (normal and reversed-phase systems), thin layer chromatography (TLC), column liquid chromatography including HPLC, gas chromatography, ion exchange and size exclusion chromatography. Also, Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and basic electrophoresis and capillary electrophoresis techniques are presented. Additionally, more specialised topics may be briefly presented, e.g.: sample preparation (solid phase extraction, SPE), coupled chromatography-spectroscopy, chromatographic chiral separations.

Learning outcome

At the end of the course the student can: - be able to explain the principles of the most important liquid and gas chromatographic as well as electro-migration techniques; apply the methods in a sustainable context such as circular economy; - have technical knowledge of, and some practical experience with, analyses in gas and liquid chromatography, and in capillary electrophoresis in a conceptual learning environment; - be able to evaluate strengths and limitations of the most important chromatographic separation and detection methods in relation to the properties of the sample and of the analysis task; - be able to understand principles and their practical application in publications describing chromatography or electro-migration techniques; - be able to learn to apply relevant techniques on his/her own in a sensible and effective way, with minimal requirement for theoretical, and limited need for practical, additional teaching/learning; - be able to report and discuss chromatographic analyses in a scientifically sound, and understandable ) way; - (some of them) be able to choose and plan the use of suitable chromatographic or electrophoretic techniques for actual analytical problems based on a reasonable degree of knowledge of potentially relevant methods; - be able to consider HSE in relation to chromatographic experimentation.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, lab and exercises. Schedule will be published at semester start.

Expected work load in the course is 200-225 hours.

Compulsory assignments

  • Approved laboratory course
  • Approved exercises/Midterm examinations

Further on evaluation

All laboratory exercise reports must be approved in order to get access to the final examination. Final examination is written school exam.

Required previous knowledge

Knowledge corresponding to KJ1000, KJ1021 and KJ1024 or KJ1000 and KJ1000 and KJ1020 or TKJ4102, TMT4115 and TMT4122 or TMAT1002, TMAT1005, TMAT1007 and TMAT1009.

Course materials

E.Lundanes, T.Greibrokk and L. Reubsaet; "Chromatography, Basic Principles, Sample Preparation and Related Methods", Wiley, 2014, ISBN 978-3-527-33620-3. Handouts given in connection with the laboratory exercises. Alternatively, J.M.Miller; "Chromatography, Concepts and Contrasts", Wiley 2005) may be used. The old texbook (in Norwegian): T. Greibrokk, J. Karlsen og K.E. Rasmussen: Kromatografi, 3. utg., Universitetsforlaget, Oslo, 1998; reprinted by Pensumforlaget AS, 2005 (ISBN 82-13-02356-0) could still be helpful too, but is no longer fully sufficient.
