Course content

The Master Thesis is usually done in one of the research fields of the department. As a rule, the work is done during the 5th year of study, normally in the 10th semester. Students should plan the choice of the courses as early as possible in order to take courses that are both relevant for the field of specialization and give a certain breadth. In the thesis, the candidate shall reflect briefly on its relevance for the candidate as a teacher, and its contribution to/relevance for sustainable development in light of for example the UN sustainability goals or sustainable development as a multidisciplinary subject in Norwegian schools, as described in the National Curriculum.

Learning outcome

Work on the Thesis is the core of the Master program. The Master Thesis should be an independent scientific work (that could be in the form of a survey) where the student shows understanding of the current research and/or relevant theories and methods that are important with respect to the topic of the Thesis.

Learning methods and activities

The Master Thesis is an independent scientific work under the supervision of a faculty member. Results obtained when working on the Thesis could also be presented in a seminar.

Compulsory assignments

  • Oral presentation of the thesis before submission date

Further on evaluation

The thesis has one compulsory assignment: Oral presentation of the thesis. The presentation should be done before or at the same time as the thesis is submitted. The presentation can be done with only the thesis supervisor present.

If the letter grade "F" is given after the master's thesis has been graded at the final exam, the thesis can be submitted again in a new or reworked thesis with significant changes. Students who want this must notify the faculty within three months. The department must, in consultation with the supervisor and examiner, assess whether it is possible to rework the student's master's thesis or whether a new thesis must be written.
