About the course

Course content

Game+ is a video game with a purpose beyond just entertainment, e.g. health, therapy, learning, politics, security, military, recruitment, physical exercise, art and more. In the course, the students will learn to define and explain central concepts within games+ (serious games) and game technology, and methods to design, develop and user test applications that uses game technology and theories from video games to make them engaging, motivating and enjoyable to use. The course gives knowledge about gameflow, intrinsic motivation for learning, gamer types, the effect of using audio and points, various types of games+ (serious games), and existing game technologies. The course also gives a practical introdution to the use of methods and techniques related to design, development and user testing of games+ (serious games) through a project.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

  • Be able to describe sentral concepts related to game+ (serious games), theory on how video games and game technology motivates and engage.
  • Be able to describe a method for development and evaluation of game-based learning.
  • Be able to describe various types of games+ (serious games), and describe exiting game technologies.

Skills:

  • Be able to use methods for designing and evaluating game-based learning applications.
  • Be able to use methods for user tests of games+ (serious games).
  • Be able to design, implement and evaluate an application based on game-based motivational theory and game technology.

General competence:

  • Improved presentation and design skills.
  • Improved skills in team work.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercise lectures, work and project. The course will be held in English.

Further on evaluation

The report from the project is the basis for the grade in the course.

In the event of voluntary repetition, fail (F) or valid absence, all course-activities must be retaken in a semester with teaching. Evaluations are only held in semesters with teaching.
