Course content
Properties of organic compounds. Stereoisomerism. Resonance and inductive effect, structure and reactivity. The main drug classes and characteristic reactions, reaction mechanisms. Biomolecules; amino acids and proteins, carbohydrates, lipids and nucleic acids.
Learning outcome
The student can name organic compounds using IUPAC nomenclature rules. The student can identify and classify the most important functional groups of organic compounds. The student can describe and assign the configuration of chiral centers in molecules. The student can explain stereochemistry and resonance as well as describe and explain the physical properties of organic compounds. The student will be able to describe and explain mechanisms for basic organic-chemical reaction types. The student can explain and compare the structure and basic function of the biochemically important compounds carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids and relate the structures to functional groups of organic compounds. The student can reproduce research work in organic and biomolecular chemistry. The student can conduct simple organic-chemical and biochemical laboratory experiments. The student can plan and perform synthesis of simple organic molecules. The student can communicate and discuss results from laboratory experiments in simple reports. The student can use electronic tools to draw chemical and biomolecular structures and perform simple simulations and naming tasks.

Further on evaluation
Compulsory Laboratory Requirements: Theory exercises and laboratory exercises with mandatory attendance. Permitted aid: Molecular building kit is available for lending in the examination room. Simple calculator. Deferred examination: August. In case of postponed examination (continuation examination), written examination may be changed to oral examination. For applications for crediting, approval and integration of courses from previous years or other institutions' equivalent education, each application will be dealt with individually and the applicant must be able to count credits for overlapping courses.
