Course content
Programmable logic circuits with focus on FPGAs. Structure in digital systems on a system level and on register transfer level (RTL). Description of digital systems using hardware descriptive languages. Design and verification of digital systems. Implementation of embedded systems by connecting microcontroller platforms and FPGA-systems. Real-time systems.
Learning outcome
Knowledge: The candidate
- can explain the architecture and behavior of programmable circuits.
- can explain the difference between combinational and sequential digital logic.
- can explain how a state machine is structured and works.
- can explain how a high-level modeling language can be used to describe the structure and behavior of a digital system.
- can explain how a digital system can be tested and simulated.
- has specialized knowledge of the design process for an embedded system.
Skills: The candidate
- can work with and advanced problem that is only defined at a general level
- can perform development, debugging, and troubleshooting of advanced systems that include reconfigurable logic and microcontrollers with software.
- can use state-of-the-art tools for development and testing of machine software and hardware and integration with sensors and actuators.
General competence: the candidate
- Can work in a team on a project with an overall goal.
- Specify, design and implement a digital system.
Learning methods and activities

Further on evaluation
The basis for the final grade in the course is given by a group grade on the semester project (counts 30%) and an individual written digital exam (counts 70%). Both have a letter grade. Information about the scope of the semester project, submission methods and deadlines and assessment practices will be given at the start of the semester. Information about obligatory activities will be given at the start of the semester.
If case of a re-sit examination in May/Juni, this can be executed as an oral exam. If the course isn't passed after the re-sit examination it is possible to re-take individual evaluation objects. Approved obligatory activity requirements are valid until the following academic year.
