Learning outcome

Knowledge. The candidate should be able to:

  1. Explain layered model for computer networks.
  2. Explain the main principles of how network communication works and influences networked computing.
  3. Explain a protocol and be able to view it in a general communication context.
  4. Know a range of communication standards for data transmission.
  5. Explain the most important security mechanisms in communication networks.

  2. Use data tools to analyze packet content in network traffic.

General competence. The candidate should be able to:

  1. Evaluate, specify or select a communication solution for a system.
  2. Present problems and communication technical solutions to professional colleagues.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, exercises, project work with guidance.

Compulsory assignments

  • Computer- and written exercises

Further on evaluation

All mandatory exercises must be approved to get access to examination.

Course includes mandatory project work in groups that will go into depth in a selected area of data communication such as network programming, IoT or a given communication standard / protocol.

The project group must write a work contract defining cooperation among the group members and rules for ethical and responsible work. The final report must include a work log which indicates how each group member has contributed to the project during the semester. The grade can differ among group members, based on documented contribution.

The final grade is based on two parts, both of which must be approved:

  1. Project report, in groups, weight: 50%.
  2. Written individual digital exam, weight: 50%.

In case of repeated examination after passing the course, the whole course must be repeated. In case of failed grade in the course (grade F), individual parts which were not approved can be repeated the following year without retaking the whole course.

Re-sit exam in August may be changed to oral examination.
