Course content
- Design criterias for highvoltage insulation
- Calculations of the electric field strength in various configurations
- Calculations of Lightning overvoltages and Switching overvoltages and knowledge about protection against overvoltages.and short circuit and earth fault
Knowledge of the structure of the components of:
- Distribution networks with distribution network station
- Regional grid with transformer station
- Main Grid with switchgear
Learning outcome
After completing the course the student is meant to have:
- the theoretical basis for calculating voltage stresses in electrical high voltage grid.
After the course the students should have knowledge about:
- infrastructure, voltage levels and use of components and equipment for high voltage transmission and distribution in Norway.
- material properties that are important for electrical stress of high voltage insulation and the most widely used insulation materials.
- simplified theoretical models for calculating estimates of stresses of electrical equipment during normal operation, temporary overvoltages, atmospheric surges and switching surges in the grid, shortciruit calculation with IEC60909
Learning methods and activities
Part of the lectures will be flipped classroom where the students first watch videos and the issues are discussed in plenary with examples.
Simulation, modeling and problems are solved in practice lessons, partly in joint practice lessons and partly as group work.
Students hand in work as two practice sets that must be approved in order to sit for the exam.
Compulsory assignments
- Exercises
Further on evaluation
Oral examination with up to half an hour examination of the students. The students are given a pre-assignment which must be answered in an oral exam. This is followed by additional tasks that you answer partially on the spot. Short preparation time for these can be given depending on the completion of the oral.
Specific conditions
Admission to a programme of study is required:
