Course content

Introduction to practical control engineering. Representation of dynamic systems with ordinary differential equations. Linearization. Laplace transform and transfer functions. Block diagrams. Frequency analysis. Experimental and mathematical modelling of physical processes. Stability theory and stability investigations. Tuning of PID-controllers based on analyses both in the time and frequency domain. Practical limitations and alternative control structures. Realization of control algorithms.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The candidate can explain

- the purpose of introducing control loops.

- functioning and purpose with each component in a control loop.

- correspondence between the presented representational forms for dynamic systems.

- the terms steady-state and dynamic error, reaction time and stability, and how they can be specified.

- how the choice of controller influences steady-state deviation, response time and stability.

Skills:

The candidate can

- carry out experimental and mathematical modelling of simple processes.

- draw block diagrams of simple processes.

- reduce block diagrams.

- tune controllers using the lectured methods.

- calculate how disturbances influence both the controlled and uncontrolled system.

- analyze stability, and quantify stability margin.

- make use of modern computer tools within all mentioned areas.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, self study, assignments and laboratory exercises.

Compulsory assignments

  • Excercises and LAB

Further on evaluation

Final grade is based on a written exam. 6 mandatory assignments are given. Four (4) assignments mustbe approved before the final exam. In addition, a mandatory lab program must be approved before thefinal exam. Examination aids allowed: Specified text books in original binding. Hand written notes on bookpages allowed. Bookmarks without text allowed. Simple, specified calculator.

Re-sit exam is set up in August. In the event of a re-sit exam, the examination may be changed to an oral examination.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
