About the course

Course content

This course will give a basic introduction to principles and practices relevant to different teaching and learning situations, particularly relevant for PhD students at the IE Faculty. Participant will be given the opportunity to reflect on different teaching-learning practices, learning environments, and assessment practices, in order to be able to make knowledge bases decisions in their own practice. Participants will also get insight into recent research on teaching and learning at higher education, in particular within their own subject area.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - After completing the module the candidates should show knowledge about - different views on learning and connections between views on learning, the design of teaching-learning activities and assessment - a range of teaching-learning activities, learning environments, methods for assessment and feedback, and about their respective strengths and limitations - research on teaching and learning at higher education, in particular with respect to particular issues and challenges involved in teaching and learning within the candidates’ own subject area

Skills After completing the module the candidates should be able to - design teaching-learning activities, and contribute to the design of assessment structures, based on explicit learning goals and provide feedback that supports student learning - collect evidence as a basis for analysing, discussing and developing teaching-learning activities in their own subject area, and reflecting on whether learning goals have been reached - make knowledge-based decisions about how to design teaching-learning activities in a specific topic for a specific group of learners - read research papers on teaching and learning in their own subject area and present relevant findings to others with a reflection on their significance

General Competence After completing the module the candidates should - demonstrate a reflective and professional attitude towards teaching at higher education - be able to continually develop their repertoire of teaching methods

Learning methods and activities

Teaching and learning methods used in the course are: interactive lectures, small group discussions, individual presentations and reflective writing.

Each candidate should choose an area of his/her teaching or supervision activity to be developed as part of the module. The area chosen should be one where there is a desire and/or an identified need to improve practice, or explore new approaches. The activity should be carried out as part of the candidate’s teaching duties.

Further on evaluation

Assessment is based on the candidate submitting a report from the developmental activity with clearly formulated goals. The report should contain a description of the activity where choices that have been made are grounded in relevant theory. The report should also contain a reflection on whether the set goals have been attained as well as specific areas for improvement. The grading scale used is Pass/Fail.
