About the course

Course content

The course will give an introduction to Sport Psychology with emphasis on Acceptance-Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Humanistic Psychology, and how the different approaches are used in sports. Subjects for the course are: motivation, self-efficacy, gender, child and youth sports, elite sports, emotions, inner dialogue, stress management and anxiety.

Readings for the course is a textbook in Norwegian supplemented with research articles and book chapters in English.

The teaching is a combination of lectures and group seminars. Both the lectures and seminars emphasize involving students in active learning. Especially seminars will be the context for discussions and group tasks.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: the student shall:

  • be introduced to, and have knowledge about how to use psychological theory in a sport setting.
  • gain knowledge about important psychological mechanisms through participation in practical activities.

Skills - the student shall demonstrate the ability to:

  • demonstrate competence in terms of applying psychological theories on both individual- and group perspectives.
  • respond to a given topic in an analytical and discursive manner through the use of scientific texts.

Learning methods and activities

4 hours of teaching per week, divided into 2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group seminars. Some weeks are set aside for writing work.

Compulsory assignments

  • 70 % attendance on seminars
  • Term Paper
