About the course

Course content

The course presents critical sociological perspectives on inequality in sport. Topics include social class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability and age. The interrelation of key themes and issues relating to each topic will be discussed, using relevant social theory to aid critical analysis. The main focus will be on how social inequalities are constructed, reproduced and changing in different sport contexts.

Learning outcome

Knowledge - the student will gain knowledge about:

  • How social inequalities in sport contexts are constructed, reproduced and changing.
  • Which social theories are the most adequate to explain and understand the processes and mechanisms constructing and reproducing inequalities in sport.
  • The ways in which inequalities in sport interrelate.

Skills - the student shall develop skills:

  • To describe and discuss relevant social issues and inequalities in sport, applying social theory in a competent and independent manner.
  • To write a paper about central topics connected to content of the course.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures 2 hours pr. week and seminars 3 hours every second week.

Compulsory assignments

  • Papers and/or presentations from the syllabus

Required previous knowledge

75 credits in Social Sciences and Sports Sciences or equivalent. The requirement must be fulfilled to be admitted to the course.
