IDG2750 - XR and 3D in Interactive Environments

About

Lessons are not given in the academic year 2024/2025

Course content

This course addresses what happens when existing technologies are combined to create experiences, where 3D modeling and digital solutions meet the physical world.

Through strategic use of design methodology and interaction design techniques, students will produce socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable design solutions and demonstrate their qualities through the development of prototypes.

Students work on concept development, design, production, and construction of an interactive environment.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Upon completion of the course, students will have knowledge of:

  • Interaction within VR, AR, and XR
  • 3D modeling
  • The opportunity space that arises from the combination of 3D modeling, XR, and physical environments
  • Methods, tools, and techniques required to develop concepts for, design, and evaluate interactive XR environments

Skills

After completing the course, students will:

  • Have experience with 3D software (e.g., Blender)
  • Have the ability to map out a problem and propose solutions to this problem that are academically grounded and extend beyond the physical space
  • Be able to develop sketches, 3D models, and combine these with physical/tactile/sensory and digital prototypes to concretize the proposals

General Competence

Upon completing the course (i.e., another course involving one or more practical design projects), the student will have gradually developed as an explorer, concept developer, and designer. The student will also have established an increasingly broad repertoire of solution types and thus, as a designer, be able to handle a range of typical genres within screen-mediated communication and interaction. This provides a solid foundation for developing and designing effective and creative communication solutions as a professional designer. In addition, necessary technical skills for the development and implementation of design solutions that go beyond just limiting to a flat screen are developed.

Learning methods and activities

The teaching methods in the course consists of lectures, group-based tutorials, project work, lab/workshop work, and concept development and testing with users.

Compulsory activities

  • Project plan

Compulsory assignments

  • Project plan

Further on evaluation

Students have one mandatory group assignment early in the course. The assignment is a project description and plan for the group and must be submitted before the project can begin.

Mandatory deliverable must be passed to pass the course. If not passed, the course must be retaken during the next regular run through of the course.

Assessment: portfolio 100%.
