Course content

Typography is design for reading.
The four dimensions of typography (ergonomic, semantic, aesthetic, craft)
Cohesion and articulation.
Access structure and navigation.
Topic structure versus artifact structure.
Copy-editing and punctuation.
Hyphenation and justification.
Typeface basics.
Principles of graphic form and composition.
The elements, page layout and page makeup of the codex book.
A history of letterforms, type, and typography.

Tool training course: An introduction to InDesign.



Learning outcome

After completion of the course, the student will be in command of standard typographic terminology (Norwegian and English) and hold a basic theoretical and practical knowledge of punctuation, hyphenation & justification, microtypography, typefaces, basic principles of typographic design, page layout, and page makeup. The student can also create styles and global formats and paginate a document in the page makeup programme InDesign.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures, two-day software training course (InDesign), practical design project.

Complementary information:
The practical design project(s) is/are organised as group assignment(s) and are supervised on a weekly basis (formative-iterative evaluation). Typographic specifications must be included with the final prototypes.

Required coursework:
The practical design project(s) is/are not marked, but the project(s) must be deemed to be of sufficient quality in order for the student to take the exam. For Bachelor in Graphic Design will the practical design project(s) be included in the student’s work portfolio. The project(s) may then be included in a presentation portfolio for final graded assessment at the end of the third and final year (grades A--F).

Ordinary continuation exam. Unapproved practical design projects must be re-examined at the next regular completion of the course.
