Course content
The course will deal with organisational theory, leadership theory and teambuilding with a focus on skills and knowledge that are necessary to fulfil a role as a leader of voluntary work. Organisational theory is used to discuss communication and governance with respect to the particular situation in voluntary organizations. Leadership theory is used to discuss the different roles of a manager/leader and to look at thet tasks of a manager/leader in voluntary organizations. Teambuilding is necessary to help the manager/leader to build and develop a leadership team under the circumstances common in a voluntary organization.
Learning outcome
The course is open for all students.
Knowledges: - To understand how voluntary organizations work and why they are different from business organizations, in particular with respect to recruitment, membership and participation in the organizations management and strategy work - To gain deep insight into leadership and the leadership roles that are relevant to voluntary organizations - Leadership in Norway - To understand the basis for being able to build effective teams in organizations where the members are not contractually obliged to participate
Competences: - To be able to analyze an organization and look for areas of improvement - To be able to understand and develop your own leadership role in an organization - To be able to motivate a team for the good off the organization
General competences: - To develop your ability to analyze what happens in an organization through casework - To learn how to write an academic report - To learn to give oral and written response on other people's work in order to develop their own skills at understanding other peoples work through the process of evaluating and giving feedback on each others group reports,
Learning methods and activities
The course uses dialogue based lectures, exercises focusing on team development, and a larger case assignment in a student voluntary organization focusing on practical improvements. It is obligatory to give feedback to other students work as assigned by the course coordinators.

The course evaluation method is 100% based on a group assignment. An individual assignment must be approved in order to deliver the group assignment.

The main text book is "Arbeid i Team" by Morten Levin and Monica Rolfsen. The book will be supplemented by artciles and book chapters.
