Course content

The academic content of the Masters thesis must include a scientific investigation of a theme related to globalization. The thesis must be written in English. It should be between 17 500 - 24 500 words, and should demonstrate the student's ability to carry out an independent scientific research task. The content of the thesis should fulfill an academic level appropriate to a Master's level course, and relate to some of the aspects of the interdisciplinary framework of the courses taught in the master programme. The topic for the master thesis is selected in consultation with a supervisor.

  • Students will learn how to work on a specialized topic in an academic manner.

  • The students will be trained in the formulation of research questions and gathering and analyzing data.

General competence

  • The students will achieve competency in analyzing processes of change related to globalization and sustainable development.

Learning methods and activities

Individual supervision. Compulsory assignment: A detailed proposal in the form of a written outline of the thesis (around 5 pages) at the end of the third semester. It is expected that the examination is completed in English. Examination: Master's thesis and one hour oral defence of the thesis. The deadline for submission of the thesis is normally in May. At the beginning of the oral examination the candidate must hold a 10-15 minute presentation of the thesis. It will not be possible to use PowerPoint or similar presentation tools.

The grade for the master's thesis may be adjusted after the oral examination.

If you are given a failing grade on the master's thesis you can apply to department to resubmit your master's thesis once. To resubmit, the master's thesis must be completely new or so heavily rewritten that it can be considered a new thesis.

Master’s theses that are written in Norwegian or Scandinavian must include an abstract in English. Master’s theses that are written in a non-Scandinavian language must include an abstract in Norwegian.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Globalisation and Sustainable Development (MSGLOPOL)

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the Master's programme in Globalization. The student must have completed 90 ECTS/credits within the programme.
