Course content

The topic for the master's thesis is selected in consultation with a supervisor. The thesis is an academic study or analysis carried out by the candidate individually, under supervision. The thesis should add to the student's qualifications as a teacher of history, as stated in "den nasjonale rammeplanen for lektorutdanning". A thesis can be a thesis in history didactics, if not the thesis must show its relevance for the teacher profession in some other way (preface, introduction, conclusion). The thesis should normally contain 15.000-22.000 words (bibliography and appendix not included).

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The candidate

  • has substantial knowledge in the field of research for the master thesis
  • has detailed insights into the historiography and different perspectives used by historians to explain fundamental historical themes in the period of specialization

Skills

The candidate

  • is able to use a broad range of information and critically analyze a problem
  • is able to develop ideas and problems, give advice and elaborate and evaluate different sorts of historical problems
  • has substantial knowledge on how to use historical method as a analytical tool
  • is able to carry out an independent piece of historical research on a topic

Learning methods and activities

Further on evaluation

The final grade of the thesis might be adjusted after the oral examination.

If you are given a failing grade on the master's thesis you can apply to department to resubmit your master's thesis once. To resubmit, the master's thesis must be completely new or so heavily rewritten that it can be considered a new thesis.

Master’s theses that are written in Norwegian or Scandinavian must include an abstract in English. Master’s theses that are written in a non-Scandinavian language must include an abstract in Norwegian.

Specific conditions

Admission to a programme of study is required:
History with Teacher Education, years 8 - 13 (MLHIST)

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to the five-year Teacher Education programme with an integrated master's degree in History, and a pass grade in the following modules: HIST1300, HIST1500, HIST1505/HIST1515/HIST2535 and HIST2045/HIST2055 (or equivalent).
