About the course

Course content

The summer school is an interdisciplinary course for foreign students studying Scandinavian studies outside the Nordic countries to gain deeper knowledge of Norwegian language, culture and history. Emphasis will be placed on Norwegian war history and post-war memorials, including war representation in literary works. The ten-day summer school will bring experts from universities from both northern and central Europe to NTNU and present recent research. In addition, there will be outdoor activities and visits to places related to World War II in Trøndelag. The lectures are held in Norwegian. There will be a virtual component in addition to the physical summer school.

Learning outcome

A candidate who passes this course is expected to have the following learning outcome according to the course curriculum, defined as knowledge and skills:

Knowledge

The candidate has

  • knowledge of historical events related to World War II.
  • knowledge of different aspects of Norwegian language, culture, and literature.
  • knowledge of Norwegian text structure of general texts and academic texts.
  • knowledge of various historical and literary texts and be able to put them into a relevant context.

Skills

The candidate can

  • understand longer, continuous speech in Norwegian of a general and professional nature.
  • understand long, complex Norwegian academic texts and literary texts.
  • express themselves fluently and precisely in an oral context.

Learning methods and activities

The summer school will take place over ten days with a total of 40 hours of teaching. The teaching is divided between practical Norwegian, Norwegian history, Norwegian culture, and Norwegian literature, as well as activities such as museum visits, trips, and other social activities.

Compulsory activities: Participation in teaching. The coursework requirements are submission of podcasts and/or videos related to the teaching.

It is not possible to take the exam in a semester when the subject is not taught.

Required previous knowledge

The course is reserved for students in Scandinavian studies who are admitted to the summer school.
