Course content

This is a 7.5 ECTS course for the Interdisciplinary Post-Graduation Program in Ageing and Older Peoples Health.

The course will address key principles and guidelines for research ethics, relevant legal guidelines, systematic knowledge acquisition and critical appraisal of research with different designs. Other parts of the course will be tailored for students enrolled in The Interdisciplinary post-education Program in Aging and Older Peoples health.

Content in the course includes:

  • Capacity evaluation for service provision, treatment and participation in research
  • Ethical challenges in a health service with limited resources
  • Any ethical considerations and implications for health services and research
  • Critical reading and quality assessment of research articles/literature in the field with different designs; epidemiological, clinically randomized and qualitative studies using various assessment tools
  • Validity and reliability of study findings regarding characteristics of the instrument in different settings and samples
  • Assess and evaluate physical, mental and cognitive function using different techniques, methods and assessment tools based on setting, functional level and situation including
  • Assessment and evaluation in a cultural perspective
  • Proxy assessment and evaluation, its advantages, disadvantages and dilemma
  • Next of kin's situation and perspective on the service, research and own needs

Learning outcome

After completing and passing the course, Ethics, Assessment and Evaluation in Older Age, the student should be able to:

Knowledge:

  • Identify and discuss ethical challenges in their own field of work and link this to clinical practice and research
  • Demonstrates in-depth knowledge of research-based and experience-based knowledge
  • Can use the most central tools for in research and clinic for assessment of function and common geriatric problems

Skills:

  • Can analyze and apply ethical principles, guidelines and legislation that apply to medical and health research and clinical practice
  • Identify ethical challenges in different phases of research
  • Can carry out systematic knowledge search within his/her own field
  • Present and give a critical assessment of scientific literature relevant to the field of practice and research, ageing and elderly's health.
  • Assess and apply different approaches and use relevant assessment tools based on the participants prerequisites and setting

General competence:

  • Interpret, analyze and discuss academic issues based on systematic search of experiential knowledge, research knowledge and the needs of affected groups
  • Be able to analyze and handle ethical challenges related to clinical practice and research to ensure that older people with and without functional impairment/illness and their relatives have their interests, safeguard quality in research and clinical practice
  • Analyse and evaluate results from various systematic surveys used in practice and research to ensure adequate service provision to affected parties

Learning methods and activities

Teaching is in the form of lectures, seminars, simulation, practical exercises and assignments in the block weeks as well as group assignments between block weeks.
