Course content

The student performs (according to scientific method) literature searches, critical assessment of literature from various sources, data collection, analysis work in the laboratory and processing of results. This takes place under supervision and in collaboration with other professionals. A relevant professional issue within the medical laboratory subjects must be mapped, problematized, accounted for and discussed. The work is presented in writing in a formal scientific report (academic writing), including the use of a reference database, and by an oral presentation.

Topics and biomedical laboratory science problems to be addressed are given by the scientific community at St Olav`s University hospital, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Faculty of Natural Science, Department of Biomedical Laboratory Science and other relevant scientific communities.

Learning outcome

The student:

  • can do literature search and use reference databases.
  • is familiar with scientific methods for research and development activity in the field of biomedical laboratory sciences.
  • can critically evaluate literature from different resources.
  • are able to participate in research projects under supervision.
  • can master methods for biomedical laboratory science work in a structured and accurate manner, in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and procedures, and assess the possibilities, limitations and sources of error of methods.
  • can master methods for handling human biological material and associated results and information.
  • has insight into biomedical laboratory science issues and can make choices in line with evidence-based practice.
  • can exchange views and experiences, and can update his/her knowledge both through information gathering, contact with the academic community and the professional field.
  • can plan and carry out varied work tasks that extend over time, alone and as a participant in a group, in accordance with ethical requirements and applicable guidelines.
  • can reflect on their own professional practice, acquire new knowledge, seek and receive guidance.
  • can discuss limited academic issues within the medical laboratory sciences.
  • can document and communicate biomedical laboratory science knowledge through oral and written presentation in Norwegian.

Learning methods and activities

The bachelor project is carried out in groups with 2- 4 students pr. group and submitting of a common scientific report. The students do literature search, collection of data, perform analyses and present results under supervision in external laboratories. The bachelor project is submitted as a scientific report followed by an oral presentation. Accepted practice must be approved before submitting the thesis. In specific cases the bachelor thesis may be handed in individually. Expected working hours: 425 hours.

Further on evaluation

If the student does not pass the subject, a new agreement is concluded in each individual cases.
