Course content

Main topics in the course:

  • Sources of error related to practical survey activities using level, total station and GNSS
  • Planning, use and calculations of observations using level
  • Planning, use and calculations of observations using GNSS (RTK, static)
  • Planning, use and calculations of total station observations
  • Survey methods: Levelling, coordinate observations using GNSS RTK, GNSS static logging, traverse and basic stake out.
  • Digital data formats and software for land survey calculations

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

After completed course, the candidate shall:

  • Be able to explain basic manner of operation of level, GNSS (RTK, static) and Total Station
  • Be able to explain basic manner of operation and the importance of functional tripods, prisms, bubble levels, compensator and optical plummets
  • Be able to explain sources of error related to levelling, total station observations and GNSS-observations
  • Be able to explain operational methods for control and adjustments of bubble levels, level and total station
  • Be able to explain basic structure and manner of operation of global navigation systems (GLONASS, GALILEO, GPS), and identify similarities and differences between these systems
  • Be able to explain temporal correlation related to GNSS-observations and discuss the term "independent observations"
  • Be able to identify and explain the relationship between geodesy and practical surveying, by evaluating pitfalls related to the use of e.g. UTM-projections for accurate survey tasks

Skills:

After completed course, the candidate shall be able to:

  • Plan survey operations with level, totalstation and GNSS-instruments
  • Conduct survey operations with level, totalstation and GNSS-instruments
  • Identify the need for control and adjustments of bubble level and total station
  • Analyze and quality check own observations with level, GNSS and total station
  • Conducts adjustment of coordinate observations (GNSS) and traverse (totalstation) in suitable software, document and explain statistical parameters such as standard deviation and outer reliance of calculated coordinates and heights

General competence:

After completed course, the candidate shall be able to:

  • Produce precise, written reports of conducted survey activities
  • Communicate and cooperate with other persons for survey related tasks through precise use of technical terms
