Course content

The course gives an introduction to central facts and notions of particle physics, symmetries, invariances, and conservation laws. Quantum electrodynamics and weak interactions are treated in detail in addition to electroweak unification. The course gives a rudimentary introduction to the quark model, QCD, neutrino oscillations, and gauge theories as well as the Higgs mechanism. A short introduction to group theory is given with applications to particle physics, in particular the SU(2) groups for spin and isospin.

Learning outcome

Knowledge and skills:

Upon completion of this course, the student shall:

  • Be able to account for central concepts within particle physics, such as symmetries, invariants, and conservation laws. In addition, the student shall be able to use these concepts in practical calculations.
  • Be able to account for the main content of quantum electrodynamics and weak interactions, in particular with regard to scattering processes for particles.
  • Master how Feyman-diagrams and rules are employed in practical calculations.
  • Be able to account for fundamental group theory, in particular the properties of the SU(2) group.
  • Be able to describe the Higgs mechanism and the purpose and characteristic properties of gauge theories.

General competence:

The candidate should be able to apply abstract mathematical models to concrete physical problems.

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and problem sessions. Expected workload in the course is 225 hours.

Further on evaluation

Written exam (100%). The re-sit examination (in August) may be changed from written to oral. When lectures and lecture material are in English, the exam is given in English.
