Course content

Film Sound is a course at master level where students will develop their skills in - and understanding of - planning, recording, post production and finalization of sound for film.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of the course the student has knowledge of:

  • practical application of sound in film through different stages of film production
  • the central terminology associated with film sound
  • history and theory of film sound
  • narrative aspects and communicative particularities of film sound

Skills

Upon successful completion of the course the student knows how to:

  • conceptualize, plan, record, and process audio for movies
  • create narrative sound for film
  • master subject terminology in connection with film productions and analyzes

Learning methods and activities

All activities are joint with FVP2005 Film Sound.

Lectures, seminars, group sessions and practical production assignments are given during the course.

Course requirements: Compulsory production work. The number of production works that must be submitted will be specified by the course supervisor at the start of the course.

In order to take the final exam of the course, the student must have documented attendance of 80 %. Absence of up to 20 % covers non-attendance due to illness or other, documentable causes. Absence exceeding the 20 % limit is not accepted, even if it's caused by circumstances the student are not responsible for. In special cases, like serious or long-term illness, the student can receive adapted teaching by application to the department.

It is the responsibility of the student to keep updated on messages from the department or the teacher on Blackboard. The course is taught in Norwegian only.

The final assessment consists of an individual written part and practical production part. A final grade is given for the two parts.

The written assignment counts as 1/2 of the final grade. The production work counts as 1/2 of the final grade. All components of the assessment must be passed. If a student fails one component of the exam, this component must be retaken to complete the course. The assessment of the component that was passed will remain until both components of the exam are passed. After this the final grade will be calculated. If the practical component of the exam is to be retaken, the scheduling of this will be contingent upon the resources of the Department.
