Course content

DRA3192 Master's Thesis, Practical Option, constitutes the written part of the artistic or pedagogical investigation of the project. The thesis consists of the description of and reflection upon the project according to the approved project plan. In DRA3192 the student must critically reflect on the practical work performed in and place it within an academic and cultural context, as well as presenting the theoretical foundations of the thesis' research. Depending on the proposed topic of the thesis, the written work can either focus on the process of creating an artistic product, or on the product itself.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:

  • Thorough knowledge about both practical and research in drama/theatre, related to the topics and research questions addressed in the candidates individual master's project.

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, students will know how to:

  • reflect self-critically on his/her project, using relevant perspectives from the field of drama and theatre.
  • present and communicate argumentation in an adequate academic language, within academic standards.
  • be able to evaluate relevant ethical issues in research.

Learning methods and activities

Tutoring/supervision will be provided in connection with the work on the assignment. In addition to individual supervision by an assigned supervisor, a supervision seminar is offered every semester to all Masters students. This will cover the general needs for assistance related to the thesis work, as well as conversation and discussion related to the supervision, study progression, etc. The written thesis should between 20.000 and 25.000 words. The word count does not include front cover, preface, table of contents, bibliography or attachments. The thesis must include the word count typed, and it is the responsibility of the candidate that the word count is accurate. All students must write an abstract of the thesis of approx. 1/2 - 1 page. The abstract should be written in Norwegian and preferably in English. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian, but may take place in English. The master’s thesis can be written in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English. Every master’s thesis must include a Norwegian and English summary.

Further on evaluation

The final assessment for DRA3192 consists of following parts:

  • A written thesis of between 20.000 and 25.000 words.
  • A subsequent discussion of the work with the examination committee of up to 30 minutes, adjusting the grade given for the thesis.

The candidate will, well ahead of the examination, be notified if the thesis is given the grade F (fail).
