Course content
The course addresses the concept and theories around performance, theatre, and drama from a historical and contemporary point of view.
It focuses on contemporary art phenomena and cultural aesthetic forms in society. To understand these phenomena, students learn different theoretical perspectives coming from performance studies, applied theatre and theatrical event, among others.
In addition, the course offers a series of seminars where students work on developing their own master project descriptions in the light of these theoretical perspectives.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have knowledge about
- recent theoretical perspectives on phenomena in the field of performance, theatre and drama.
- the position of performance, theatre and drama in aesthetic, epistemological and societal contexts.
- the coherence between ones own subject of interest and current theory in the field.
Skills
Upon successful completion of this course, students will know how to
- Act self critically, analytic and independent towards phenomena and discourses in the field of performance, theatre and drama.
- Use cultural perspectives and theories when discussing phenomena in performance, theatre and drama.
- Use basic concepts from the field, independently, on practical and theoretical problems.
- Present and discuss issues and problems in different arenas of performance, theatre and drama on an academic discourse level, both in oral and written form.
Learning methods and activities
Instruction is offered in the form of lectures and seminars. In addition there will be a seminar where the students develop an outline for their thesis project.
Course requirements:
- a written exercise of about 2000 words
- one oral presentation in the seminar
- outline for project description 1800 - 2000 words
The course also offers a seminar series for master students to develop their own master project.
Students are required to check the result of their assignments and to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Blackboard.
Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian but may take place in English.

Further on evaluation
The final assessment consists of a 6 days take home examination. The scope of the text must be between 4000-5000 words. The word count should not include front page, preface, table of content, literature list or appendix. The final assessment should be marked with the word count. It is the students own responsibility to ensure that the number of words are correct.
