Course content

The course provides a practical and theoretical introduction to art-based research strategies, focusing on how theatre can be used to do research. The course is a practical-theoretical immersion in art-based research, with a focus on the connection between theoretical and methodological choices. Students work exploratively with art-based research methods and research dissemination in the form of performative scenic work as well as written reflection. The course emphasizes the sustainable use of materials in process and dissemination.

Learning outcome

The student is prepared practically and theoretically for the researcher role, and for her own Master's project.

Knowledge

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have knowledge about:

  • art-based research methods and the relevance of these to students master's project.
  • research dissemination related to own master's project.
  • central and current research topics
  • disposition of material and logistical aspects of processes.
  • sustainable solutions in research and communication.
  • research ethics assessment.

Skills

Upon successful completion of this course, the students will know how to:

  • plan, undertake, communicate and evaluate a practice-based project by use of relevant theories.
  • argue for and evaluate choice of artistic design and method.
  • reflect upon their own research process and the relevance it has for planning of master project.
  • develop critical reflection of use of resources and ethical considerations.

Learning methods and activities

The course consists of lectures, seminars and supervision.

The course also offers a seminar series for master students to develop their own master project.

Students are required to check the results of practice assignments via Blackboard. Students are required to keep up to date on messages from the department or the lecturer via Blackboard.

Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian but may take place in English.

Compulsory assignments

  • 80 % attendance in instructions
  • Assignment
  • An outline for a thesis project idea of 500- 1000 words

Further on evaluation

Final assessment is divided into two parts. It consists of a performance/practical demonstration that counts 2/3 and is adjusted through individual oral exam. The project report counts 1/3 and is adjusted through individual oral exam. The oral exam consist of a discussion of the performance/ practical demonstration and the individual contribution of the student to the practical project.

Performance/practical demonstration can be conducted either as a group or an individual. The form will be given by the course instructor. By failing the exam, the course must be retaken.
