Course content
The course will give the students an introduction to research methods with a particular focus on problem definition, research strategies and methods for generating and analyzing data. This will enable the students to plan and carry out their own empirical research within their subject area. In addition, the students will gain an insight into ongoing research projects at the department. These examples will enable students to critically assess the applied methodological approach in research projects.

The candidate has knowledge of:
K1 - how to plan and carry out empirical research within the subject area
K2 - how to develop a problem definition and how this affects the research process
K3 - both qualitative and quantitative research designs and associated methods for data collection
K4 - basic methods for analyzing qualitative and quantitative data, as well as criteria for assessing the quality of empirical research
K5 - ongoing research projects within the subject area
Skills:
The candidate has skills related to:
F1 - applying acquired knowledge in the work of carrying out empirical research using quantitative and/or qualitative methods
F2 - performing analysis in and interpret results from both quantitative and/or qualitative data
F3 - assessing validity and reliability in empirical research
F4 - report and communicate conclusions from professional problems and empirical research
General competence:
The candidate has competence related to:
G1 - on a professional basis choose methodological approaches in empirical research
G2 - being able to obtain and analyze data
G3 - being able to carry out critical method reflection related to own empirical research
G4 - see the subject in a larger societal perspective
Learning methods and activities
The teaching activities in the course are a combination of lectures, guest lectures, group activities and presentations with various topics related to research methods.
Further on evaluation
Assessment method: Portfolio assessment provides a basis for the final grade in the course, which is assessed as passed/failed. In the event of voluntary repetition, failed or valid absence, the entire folder must be taken again at the next completion of the course.
